AN#140 Self-assembly of gold nanoparticles measured with MP-SPR
Gold nanoparticles were immobilized on a monolayer self-assembled on gold. Functional groups on the chain ends of the monolayer facilitated an anchoring of gold nanoparticles to the layer. Multi-Parametric Surface Plasmon Resonance (MP-SPR) enabled a real-time measurement of the binding of the gold nanoparticles to the surface layer.
AN#139 Supported lipid layers characterization with MP-SPR
Multi-Parametric Surface Plasmon Resonance (MP-SPR) was used to characterize lipid layer structures adsorbed on a different substrates. Silicon dioxide and low molecule weight dextran surfaces supported formation of lipid bilayer (SLB) whereas thiolated polyethylene glycol supported vesicular layer formation (SLV). Thickness and refractive index of deposited lipid layer was calculated: SLB was about 5 nm…
Surface modification of cellulose nanocrystals with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide
Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) prepared by sulfuric acid hydrolysis of cotton were surface modified with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). Essentially, the counterions of the CNC surface sulfate ester groups are exchanged for cetyltrimethyl-ammonium (CTA+), which acts as a bulky, amphiphilic cation. The CTAB-modified CNCs were thoroughly purified to remove surfactant that was non-electrostatically bound. The surface modification…
Study of the interactions of proteins with a solid surface using complementary acoustic and optical techniques
Membrane water treatment processes suffer severely from (bio)fouling phenomena, defined as an undesired deposition and build-up of adsorbed materials, which alters the membrane performance. The control of membrane (bio)fouling is directly related to first the (bio)foulant agent—membrane surfaceinteractions arising at a much earlier stage during the process. This study aims at real time characterization of interaction between proteins and polymericmembrane surface. The adsorbed organic mass, water content, and the corresponding viscoelastic properties of…
Biodegradable Polyurethane Carrying Antifoulants for Inhibition of Marine Biofouling
Biodegradable polyurethane with N-(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)maleimide (TCPM) pendant groups has been prepared via a combination of a thiol–ene click reaction and a condensation reaction. The TCPM moieties acting as antifoulants are released as the polyurethane degrades in the marine environment. The biodegradation and hydrolyzation of the polyurethane were investigated by use of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D)…
An impedimetric study of DNA hybridization on paper-supported inkjet-printed gold electrodes
In this study, two different supramolecular recognition architectures for impedimetric detection of DNA hybridization have been formed on disposable paper-supported inkjet-printed gold electrodes. The gold electrodes were fabricated using a gold nanoparticle based ink. The first recognition architecture consists of subsequent layers of biotinylated self-assembly monolayer (SAM), streptavidin and biotinylated DNA probe. The other recognition…
Tuning Cellulose Nanocrystal Gelation with Polysaccharides and Surfactants
Gelation of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) dispersions was measured as a function of the presence of four nonionic polysaccharides. Addition of hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), hydroxypropyl guar (HPG), or locust bean gum (LBG) to CNC dispersions induced the gelation of dilute CNC dispersions, whereas dextran (DEX) did not. These behaviors correlated with adsorption tendencies; HEC, HPG, and…
Dynamic and equilibrium performance of sensors based on short peptide ligands for affinity adsorption of human IgG using surface plasmon resonance
This paper characterizes the potential of novel hexameric peptide ligands for on-line IgG detection in bioprocesses. Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) was used to study the binding of human IgG to the hexameric peptide ligand HWRGWV, which was covalently grafted to alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAM) on gold surfaces. Peptide coupling on SAMs was verified, followed by…
Surface Plasmon Resonance in Living Cell Sensing
Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is a label free technique to study surface interactions. It is based on photon-plasmon coupling. Laser light is directed through a prism and reflects form a metal surface, often gold. At certain conditions, photons turn into plasmons, which then propagate on the metal surface. The refractive index (RI) of the medium…
Effect of gold nanoparticles on the structure and electron-transfer characteristics of glucose oxidase redox polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes
Efficient electrical communication between redox proteins and electrodes is a critical issue in the operation and development of amperometric biosensors. The present study explores the advantages of a nanostructured redox-active polyelectrolyte-surfactant complex containing [Os(bpy)2Clpy](2+) (bpy=2,2′-bipyridine, py= pyridine) as the redox centers and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as nanodomains for boosting the electron-transfer propagation throughout the assembled…
